Most public transport is made by guagua, which can be anything from a pick-up to a fifty-passenger bus. What distinguishesguaguas from long distance buses is that guagua stop almost anywhere on there route. Instead buses stop only at terminals. One mightthink, that guaguas are not organized and don't have timetable, however this is not true, but always take in consideration that schedules are usually flexible.
If the guagua not bigger than a 12-passenger minibus the driver might let at the door of your destination. If you have to transfer to an other guagua, tell the driver. He will take you to where you can catch the next the next guagua.
Also keep in mind that luggage space on guaguas is limited and usually not more then suitcase per passenger is accepted per passanger.
Many guidebooks indicate that there is no bus from the International Airport "Las Americas" in Santo Domingo to the city. This is simply not true. Buses leave regularly from the second level of Terminal A (South). Depending on the destination and the journey takes20 to 40 minutes. Buses to the east (Punta Cana, La Romana and so on) stop at the intersection of the road to the airport with thehighway. To get there take any bus or taxi, or take a taxi to Boca Chica and wait there on the corner of Av Caracoles with the Highway.
